It goes without fail that if you want your life to change, you’re going to have to change your life. One cannot happen without the other. You can hope, believe, pray and wish all you want, but at the end of the day YOU are going to have to put in the work in order to glean the results.
This is a hard pill to swallow, even for myself. There are so many changes I would like to see happen in my life. Yet, as much as I find myself daily thinking about said changes, I do very little to bring them into existence.
Take my writing for example. I have written a full length novel. Over 9 years ago actually. Over the years, I have pulled it out, worked on it, revamped it, added to it and in general just pushed it from one side of my mind to the other. But what I truly want is to see it published. Even beyond that I would love to see a movie made out of it.
Have I taken any steps to make this happen? A few, here and there. I have submitted to one or two agents over the past few months. Currently I am trying to learn the in’s and out’s of twitter where I have/am following several writers, agents and other hopefuls like myself, all searching for that one person/several people who want to read the genre of book that I poured my heart and soul into writing.
Do I spend hours a day honing my craft and reading every article/blog I can find on how to get published?
Am I online at least once a day working on polishing up my query letter and synopsis so that when I do find an agent I want to submit to I have the absolute best to send them?
Once again my answer would be no. 🙁
So when I sit around and have a pity party because my (in my mind) very well written book that should be a movie, is not sitting on the shelf of every big bookstore known to man and beast, I have no one to blame but myself. Yet, here I continue to sit and dream about the day I turn on the lifetime channel and see my book, now movie, in living color.
Dreaming is good. Great even! But if it doesn’t lead to action, it will never go beyond a dream. If you want anything in your life to change, regardless of whether, like me the change is to go from an unknown writer to a best-selling author, or if it’s experimenting with spices in your kitchen to owning a slew of restaurant franchises. Whatever you want to change about your life, you are first going to have to change your habits. Your daily rituals in fact.
What is the very first thing you need to do in order to start the process of change? You know what it is you want. You can see your life as you wish it to be. You have the vision clearly in your head. OK, now get up, stop thinking about what you want and start preparing to make it happen.
This weeks challenge is to make lists. Start with your dream. Be very concise. What do you want the change in your life to consist of? Now what is the very first step to get started. For me it has been to really put effort into creating a great query letter and synopsis and then finding agents and groups where I can submit my work. I am also learning to build relationships within these communities and paying attention to what others who are were I want to be have done.
If you need to get a white board and make daily list or a notebook to start writing down things as you think of them. Take the first step. Once you get comfortable doing small things you will be ready to start working on big things. As you start working on big things you will see changes starting to take place.
If you follow these simple instructions, and I am speaking to myself here as well, the changes we want in our lives will come to fruition. It may not be today, or even next week, but if we are consistent in our motivation and continue to do the work, there is no doubt it will happen. For you the reader, and myself as well.
